Checking In, Not Checking Off: A New Take on Talking to God

Could You Chat with God Like You Do on Social Media?

Imagine if talking to God was as casual as updating your status on Facebook or scrolling through TikTok. What if, instead of approaching every prayer like a cosmic command to a divine Alexa—"Hey God, can I get a quick miracle?"—we just checked in as we do with friends online? Let’s dive into the idea of transforming our divine dialogues from transactional to relational, making them as regular and relaxed as our daily digital habits.

The Prayer Predicament: From Wish Lists to Genuine Connection

Flipping the Script on Divine Dialogues

Ever noticed how our prayers often sound like we’re either CEO reporting to a higher board or a kid writing a letter to Santa? But what if we switched that up? What if we started treating our prayer time more like logging onto our favourite social platform, where the goal isn't to ask for things but to share moments and thoughts?

Rethinking Our Spiritual Check-ins

Instead of starting with requests, we might just share how our day went, express gratitude, or discuss a challenge—without immediately asking for a fix. It’s about crafting a relationship, not a shopping list. This could turn our prayer time into a real-time chat with a friend who's never too busy to listen.

Trust: The Ultimate Relationship Builder

Do We Trust God Like Our GPS?

Trust is the GPS of our spiritual journey—necessary to guide us, especially when the road gets rough. But trusting God shouldn’t only be about expecting Him to lead us to a specific destination. It’s about enjoying the ride, detours and all, knowing He's with us through every twist and turn.

The ‘Just Being’ Challenge

What about dedicating a period where we focus purely on being in God’s presence? Much like a detox from social media, this could be a detox from requests. Call it "Mindfulness March" or "JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) July," where the joy comes from missing out on asking for anything and instead enjoying what is.

A Personal Journey: My Month of Mindful Prayers

From Divine Orders to Divine Dialogues

I tried changing my prayer routine to mirror how I interacted with my best friends. No agenda, just sharing life’s highs and lows and appreciating the companionship. Surprisingly, this didn't make me feel less spiritual; it made my connection feel more real and my spiritual life unexpectedly richer.

Being God’s Sanctuary, Not His Secretary

I envisioned creating a space where God could come and relax—no to-do lists handed His way. This meant my prayers became less about what God could do for me and more about appreciating the peace and presence He brings.

Conclusion: Cultivating a Casual, Continuous Conversation with God

Can we shift our view of God from being the ultimate grantor of wishes to being our ultimate friend and confidant? It might seem a bit far-fetched, like deciding to text God about the funny thing that happened on the bus, but what if that could deepen our faith in ways we never imagined?

Join the Conversation: How do you talk to God? Have you ever experimented with changing up your prayer style? What if you tried treating these divine conversations more like the casual chats you have daily? Share your thoughts and experiences, and let’s keep this inspiring conversation going!

Whether you’re deeply devout or simply spiritually curious, this new perspective on prayer invites you to rethink your spiritual dialogues. Let’s discover together the joys of chatting with God as naturally as we do with our closest friends, making faith a part of our daily digital age life!

But I think going on this tangent will lead to too much familiarity which may not be good.

If we can see him as a friend and confidant and still see him as the father and maker without taking certain things for granted then that’s fine.

  3. That’s true. Too much familiarity breeds contempt
